This quilt began as an experiment in trust — trust in color, intuition, and process. I started with a digitally generated sketch created using ChatGPT as a loose roadmap, not a pattern. Its purpose was simply to spark direction, knowing that the final piece would evolve through making.

Working improvisationally, I allowed color and movement to lead the decisions. The ombré fabrics create momentum across the surface, shifting gradually and sometimes abruptly, mirroring the way order and chaos coexist. Structure appears, dissolves, and reappears as the piece develops, shaped by both intention and response.

Although the project originated with the goal of entering SAQA’s AI: Artistic Interpretations exhibition, the finished work is less about technology and more about authorship. The quilt reflects a dialogue between a machine-generated starting point and human decision-making, where intuition ultimately overrides instruction. The result is a piece that embraces uncertainty, experimentation, and the quiet confidence that comes from letting the work become what it needs to be.

This piece began with a ChatGPT prompt used to generate a loose digital sketch. The image was never intended to be a pattern, only a starting point to explore structure, scale, and directional movement.

From there, the quilt evolved through improvisational construction. Shapes were adjusted, removed, or rebuilt as the work progressed, responding to color relationships and visual tension rather than following the original sketch closely. Strips, angles, and transitions were refined through trial and error at the design wall.

Fabric choices emphasized saturated color and strong contrast to maintain energy and forward motion across the surface. The final composition reflects a balance between an initial digital idea and hands-on decision making, with intuition guiding the majority of the process.
