Well Insulated

Status: Completed
Year: Completed 2018

Overview

Well Insulated was created in August 2018 during a period when external noise and negativity felt constant and overwhelming. The piece reflects the instinct to create protection and stability through shared space.

At its core is You + Me, a quiet reassurance that togetherness forms comfort and safety. Built outward through layers, the quilt represents a home or world intentionally constructed to shield what matters most. Dark gray and black quilting surrounds the piece, symbolizing negativity pressing in from the outside — contained, redirected, and unable to penetrate the space within.

  • Well Insulated was created in August of 2018, during a time when negativity felt constant and inescapable. The world outside felt loud, heavy, and overwhelming. This piece came from the need to create a sense of safety and control in the middle of that noise.

At the center of the quilt is You + Me. It represents reassurance — the idea that as long as we have each other, we can remain grounded and comfortable within our shared space. The center is intentionally protected, surrounded by layers that act as both structure and shelter.

The surrounding layers form a barrier, a constructed home or world that we build together. These layers are not meant to shut everything out, but to filter what we allow in. The dark grays and black quilting represent external negativity — pressure, fear, and noise — colliding with the surface and bouncing away rather than penetrating the space within.

This piece is about partnership, protection, and endurance. It reflects the belief that safety is something we actively create, not something we are given. Through shared effort and intention, our well-insulated home becomes a place where we can exist together, unaffected by what presses in from the outside.

  • Well Insulated was originally created for the Curated Quilts Mini Quilt Challenge, themed “Home.” The call included a specified color palette, which informed the limited and intentional use of color throughout the piece. Working within those constraints reinforced the idea of building structure, layers, and protection — shaping the visual language of the quilt while echoing the concept of home as something constructed, not assumed.

The piece was not accepted into the challenge, but later found its place through publication.
