Improv Television Test Pattern draws inspiration from the analog television test patterns that once filled the screen when broadcasting paused during the early hours of the day. These patterns were functional by design, created to calibrate signal, alignment, and color, yet they became a shared visual experience for an entire generation. I am interested in how something purely utilitarian can also become iconic, recognizable, and quietly meditative.

This quilt uses improvisational construction within a controlled geometric framework. The repeated pathways and angular turns reference circuitry, signal paths, and the logic of broadcast systems, while the hand-guided quilting introduces subtle variation and human presence. Order and structure are present, but they are not rigid. Small shifts accumulate, creating movement and rhythm across the surface.

Nostalgia plays a role in this piece, but it is not the destination. Instead, the work reflects on systems that once felt permanent but have since disappeared, replaced by newer technologies and different forms of noise. By translating a broadcast artifact into fabric, I am interested in slowing the image down, allowing viewers to linger on pattern, texture, and repetition, and consider how familiar visuals evolve when removed from their original context and reinterpreted through improvisational making.
