Improv Television Test Pattern by Kenny Smith: colorful striped blocks and curved gray forms sit within alternating black and yellow fields of maze-like quilting.

Overview

Improv Television Test Pattern reinterprets the broadcast calibration images that appeared when television programming paused. Its structured geometry and repeating pathways recall signal alignment, circuitry, and the visual language of analog technology.

Rooted in nostalgia but shaped through improvisation, the quilt considers how ordered systems can still permit variation and movement. Translating a once-utilitarian screen image into fabric slows it down, making room for texture, repetition, and human presence.
