Emergence by Kenny Smith: a small multicolored triangle sits within large nested gray triangles above two gray checkerboard blocks and a narrow column of color.

Overview

Emergence explores individuality within structure. Saturated color pushes through a controlled grayscale framework, reflecting the tension between conformity and self-expression. The central geometry asserts its presence, while smaller areas of color remain embedded, partially hidden, or contained.

The work considers the different ways creative identity becomes visible. Structure can support emergence, but it can also restrain it. Rather than treating those forces as simple opposites, the quilt observes how order, safety, expectation, and resistance shape the decision to be seen.
