Overview

Dualism Study began as a quilt top for the Dualism Challenge by Quilt Improv Studio. The piece explores contrast and opposition through material, scale, and color choices. Throughout the quilt, I intentionally played with prints versus solids, skinny lines versus bold lines, color against black and white, dark against light, and modern elements alongside more traditional patterns like houndstooth and fleur-de-lis.

Rather than resolving these opposites, the work allows them to coexist. The tension between choices is the point. This quilt reflects how dualities live side by side, sometimes in balance, sometimes in conflict, but always shaping the final outcome.

  • Dualism Study #1 2023 explores contrast as a design language rather than a conflict. This piece grew out of an ongoing interest in how opposing elements can coexist within a single composition. Prints and solids, thin lines and bold lines, color and black and white, dark and light, left and right, modern and traditional all sit side by side without hierarchy.

    Rather than resolving these oppositions, the work allows them to remain visible. Traditional patterns such as houndstooth and fleur de lis are placed alongside modern fabrics, emphasizing difference while maintaining balance. The composition is intentionally structured yet intuitive, reflecting how dualities often shape both visual design and lived experience.

    This study is less about choosing sides and more about acknowledging tension, contrast, and coexistence as essential parts of the whole.
