Motel Neon

2020–present

Work in progress · Collaborative improvisational piecing

Approximately 71 × 71 inches

Motel Neon, a collaborative work by Kenny Smith and Bee Sewcial artists, combines bright arrows, stars, and motel-sign lettering against a black ground.

Overview

Motel Neon began as part of the Bee Sewcial September 2020 prompt, inspired by the visual energy of roadside motel signs seen during long nighttime drives through small towns. The quilt draws on memories of travel before standardized highways, when neon light acted as both signal and shelter.

Built improvisationally against a deep black ground, the work focuses on contrast, movement, and saturated color as a way to capture that fleeting glow.
