Overview
Motel Neon began as part of the Bee Sewcial September 2020 prompt, inspired by the visual energy of roadside motel signs seen during long nighttime drives through small towns. The quilt draws on memories of travel before standardized highways, when neon light acted as both signal and shelter.
Built improvisationally against a deep black ground, the work focuses on contrast, movement, and saturated color as a way to capture that fleeting glow.

Motel Neon draws from childhood memories of long nighttime drives through small towns, where glowing motel signs punctuated the darkness like brief moments of color and promise. Before interstate exits were lined with identical chains, these neon signs felt personal, local, and fleeting—markers of place rather than destination.
Created as part of the BeeSewcial collective, this quilt explores how memory, color, and improvisation intersect. Bright, neon-inspired shapes emerge from deep black backgrounds, echoing the way light cuts through darkness and briefly commands attention before fading away. The work balances structure and spontaneity, allowing color and form to guide decisions in the moment rather than following a predetermined plan.
Motel Neon is less about nostalgia as comfort and more about remembrance as sensation—the glow, the contrast, and the quiet pause of passing through places that were never meant to be permanent, yet linger long after they are gone.

This quilt originated from the September 2020 Bee Sewcial prompt, “Motel Neon.” Participants were asked to create improvisational blocks inspired by neon signage, using bright, saturated colors set against a dark black background.
I approached the prompt intuitively, working without a pattern and allowing color and shape to guide each decision. While the original structure came from a shared prompt, the quilt evolved through personal memory, experimentation, and improvisation, eventually becoming its own visual narrative rather than a literal response.
